From its inception, ESL Defence has had a key interest in the Electronic Warfare (EW) market, its main business area being Research and Study Assignments in support of UK Defence Dstl Agency. This continues to be an important business area, although now servicing a wider customer base which includes other system houses, in particular the UK’s Prime Defence Contractors.

The Company has a respected team of specialists who are developing state-of the-art topics within the EW Research sector. The Company is not required to promote its own EW System solutions, and is, therefore, a genuinely independent source of EW knowledge.

ESL Defence will continue to provide advanced EW expertise that is available both to Dstl in their role of supporting the UK Armed Forces, and to other prime contractors responsible for integrating EW products and technology onto military platforms.

Currently there are a number of research areas within which ESL Defence is particularly active, the following lists some significant areas of our work.

An exceptionally fast Radar Cross Section/Antenna Pattern/Electromagnetic Propagation prediction tool.

Symbolic EW Modelling

An innovative new approach to System Performance Modelling.

Active Stealth

Active Stealth

A unique technique for the Active Suppression of Radar Cross Section (RCS).

Missile Decoy Design

The study and modelling of the Radar Cross Section characteristics of an RF guided missile decoy.

Impulse Radar Systems

A potential extension of radar techniques into new and important fields, e.g. stealth integrity checks.

 EW System Development

EW System Development

The design and construction of an advanced Electronic Support (ESM) Techniques Demonstrator.

Passive Stealth

A novel technque to reduce the Radar Cross Section of cables, e.g. airborne tow applications.

Other areas:

Novel antennas, e.g. mobile phone GPS-based Emitter Location.
Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) Direction Finding.
